The Çal vineyard route: high-altitude wine an hour from Pamukkale

Not everything around Pamukkale is stone and hot water. Climb into the hills southeast of Denizli and the land turns to vineyards. This is Çal, one of Turkey’s leading wine districts and the home of its newest wine trail, the Çal Bağ Yolu. About 45 minutes from the white terraces, it offers something the guidebooks rarely send you toward: a quiet afternoon of hill views and local wine, far from any crowd.

What’s up there

Çal sits high, over 1,100 metres in places, which is unusual for a wine region and is exactly the point. The days are warm and the nights are cold, and that swing gives the grapes concentration and a bright, fresh acidity.

• Çal Karası, the local grape, named after the district. It makes a light, silky red with a clear note of strawberry, a wine you will not easily find outside this corner of Turkey.
• A handful of family wineries strung along the route, each offering tastings of their own bottles.
• Charcuterie to match, boards of local cheese, cured meat and regional bites, the kind of slow lunch that turns a tasting into an afternoon.

If you happen to visit in late summer or early autumn, you may catch the harvest, when the whole valley turns to picking and pressing.

Getting there and doing it right

The route lies about 45 minutes from Pamukkale by car, and only around 20 minutes from Çardak airport, which makes it an easy first or last stop if you are flying in or out. The wineries are spread across the hills, so you will want your own car or, better for a tasting day, a driver, so no one has to stay dry behind the wheel.

Call ahead where you can. These are small, family-run places rather than big commercial cellars, and a quick message to check opening times and tasting options saves a wasted drive.

Who it’s for

This is the region’s change of pace. After the ancient cities and thermal pools, the Çal hills offer a softer, slower day: a view, a glass, a long lunch.
